Sometime in March 2012, a friend of mine was telling me about the savings on his telephone bills. I asked him how he did it. After listening to his story, I visited the telephone product website to get more official information. Then, I went to Wal-Mart in Las Vegas, Nevada (where I live) to check if it is selling the product. Fortunately, I found one. I read the information and instructions printed on the outside of the box.
Product name: MagicJack Plus
Sale price: US$99.95 + 8% sales tax = US$107.95 which I paid to Wal-Mart
How did I install the MagicJack Plus?
1. Things needed in the following order:
1.1. Modem – for the high-speed Internet connection (free, provided by Century Link in 2002)
1.2. 2Wire DSL Filter socket (free, provided by Century Link in 2002)
1.3. High-speed Internet service connection (already installed in 2002 from Century Link which I need for my computer to access the Internet. I am paying US$32.95 a month to Century Link for the high-speed Internet service connection.)
1.4. Telephone – any type (I used our old Vtech hands-free telephone set with digital answering system)
1.5. Telephone cord (already available when I purchased my old Vtech hands-free telephone)
1.6. Electrical wall outlet or extension cord with 4 or 6 electrical outlets (already available in our home)
1.7. MagicJack Plus device (which I purchased from Wal-Mart in Las Vegas at US$107.95)
1.8. MagicJack Plus installation manual that came with the MagicJack Plus device
Step 1. I connected one end of the telephone cord to my old telephone and the other end of the telephone cord to the 2Wire DSL Filter socket.
Step 2. I connected one end of the power cord to the old telephone and the other end of the power cord to the electrical extension cord with 6 outlets.
Step 3. I connected the 2Wire DSL Filter socket to the modem.
Step 4. I connected the modem to the electrical wall outlet and the wall telephone line.
Step 5. I turned on the computer and visited the magicjack.com to register my MagicJack Plus product, create my account and get my new MagicJack Plus telephone number starting with Las Vegas area code 702-xxx-xxxx. I did not pay any upfront fees for the registration or annual service. The annual service fee of US$19.95 will be billed to me at the end of every 12 months. There are NO monthly service fees.
Step 6. I waited for 30 minutes for MagicJack Plus company to process my registration and activate my account.
Step 7. Using the old telephone with a new MagicJack Plus telephone number, I dialed the cellular phone number of my friend to test the telephone connection and voice clarity. It was a success!
Step 8. I asked my friend to dial my MagicJack Plus telephone number in his cellular phone if he can contact me. Voila! I was able to talk to my friend for 2 minutes.
Step 9. Using the old telephone with a new MagicJack Plus telephone number, I called my relatives in Vancouver, Canada and I was able to talk to them for about 15 minutes with clear voice.
Step 10. After we talked, I asked my relatives in Vancouver, Canada to dial my MagicJack Plus telephone number to contact me. I talked to them on the telephone for another 10 minutes.
Step 11. I continued paying the existing telephone service with Century Link for the next 30 days. I usually paid Century Link an average of US$36.50 a month for my basic telephone service (excluding call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, etc.). My purpose was to have a backup in case the MagicJack Plus telephone will not work properly. Another reason was to avoid another one-time installation fee in case I request Century Link to re-install my local telephone service.
Step 12. After 30 days, I called Century Link to cancel my local telephone service but retained my high-speed Internet service connection. I saved about US$36.50 a month (US$438.00 a year) for canceling the Century Link telephone service. But I will be paying US$19.95 a year to MagicJack Plus for the service. Thus, my net savings is US$418.05 a year.
So far, I have no problem with my MagicJack Plus telephone connection.
